Police Hunt Burglar Who Prowled Infant’s Room in Riverdale

By Kevin Deutsch

Police are searching for a burglar who used fire escape windows to enter two Riverdale apartments, prowling a baby’s room in one and stealing jewelry from another.

A camera in the sleeping 2-month-old’s room captured the intruder prowling past the baby’s crib shortly after 8 p.m. Friday. The burglar got into the apartment, located near Johnson Avenue and West 236th Street, through an unlocked fire escape window, police said.

He briefly searched the baby’s room and fled out the window when he heard the child’s father, 32, in the living room, police said.

Five minutes later, he accessed a 28-year-old woman’s nearby apartment by forcing open the fire escape window, police said.

He stole her jewelry, a bicycle, and a backpack before escaping. The burglar was wearing a dark colored knit cap, a gray hooded sweater, a dark colored coat, and a dark colored backpack.

Anyone with information is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
