A week after Bronxites railed against a city plan that excluded wide swaths of the borough from its mask giveaway program, officials announced a slate of new distribution sites.
The Bronx will have 11 of the city’s 55 planned locations, officials said, but none will be located in the East Bronx: a sprawling area with some of the highest poverty and coronavirus death rates rates in the nation, as well as more residents of color than any other borough.
“It makes me question the motive and who profits from making every child in NY take this poison,” the first-time political candidate, and public school parent, said in the Nov. 2019 post.
A state official told Bronx Justice News multiple employees at Bronxwood Assisted Living in Williamsbridge have reported a lack of personal protection equipment and supplies, no face coverings for residents, and mismanagement by administrators, leading to the deaths of 12 or more residents.
The testing program, part of a multi-phase effort by the state to assess how many New Yorkers have contracted the disease, randomly surveyed 3,000 residents at stores across 19 counties and 40 locations.
Residing in the national epicenter of the pandemic, Bronx residents account for a confirmed 30,142 coronavirus infections, with 2,719 deaths recorded here as of Monday night.
The New York State Nurses Association filed a lawsuit against Montefiore Medical Center Monday, alleging the Bronx hospital is failing to properly protect staffers from COVID-19.
The state-run program will also facilitate the distribution of 500,000 cloth face masks to all NYCHA and other state public housing residents, as well as provide 10,000 gallons of hand sanitizer to the projects, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
