An ex-con accused of beating and trying to rape his 83-year-old neighbor–breaking several of her ribs–was ordered held on $25,000 bond, or $10,000 bail, at his arraignment Friday.
Gary Mallette, 51, whose criminal history includes more than 50 arrests and several completed prison terms for robbery and various other crimes, allegedly posed as a NYCHA repairman to get into the elderly victim’s apartment at the Castle Hill Houses – then ripped her clothes off and beat her, causing numerous fractures, police said.
It was revealed at arraignment that Mallette also faces multiple charges stemming from a Feb. 25 domestic violence incident, including petit larceny and criminal contempt for disobeying the court.
Mallette also has a warrant hold on his record for violating probation, which prevents him from being released on bond or bail, records show.
He is charged with a host of alleged crimes including rape, burglary, and sex abuse for last Saturday’s attack. The sexual assault was interrupted when a relative of the victim came home, causing Mallette to run off with her jewelry and cell phone, officials said.
