New York federal court Judge Nicholas Garaufis’ order says the Department of Homeland Security must announce by Monday that it will resume approval of applications for DACA slots and work permits, which ceased in 2017.
A federal judge Saturday ruled that Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf ascended to his position unlawfully, thus invalidating his suspension of DACA — the Obama-era program that protected thousands of Bronx residents from deportation.
The program will be implemented at CUNY’s seven community colleges, including Bronx Community College and Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, during the fall and spring academic semesters.
ICE is asking federal immigration courts to reopen old, “administratively closed” cases against undocumented immigrants living in New York City, including some from the Bronx.
