A man police said chased a woman down with a knife before charging at narcotics officers was fatally shot by cops Thursday.
“The New York City police blocked people from leaving before the curfew and then used the curfew as an excuse to beat, abuse, and arrest people who were protesting peacefully,” said Ida Sawyer, co-author of the Human Rights Watch report. “It was a planned operation with no justification that could cost New York taxpayers millions of dollars.”
Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark on Tuesday said her office will move to dismiss more than 300 summonses the NYPD issued to protestors arrested at a June 4 demonstration decrying the police killing of George Floyd.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea defended Thursday’s operation targeting peaceful protestors in the Bronx, claiming his department had intelligence demonstrators intended to “destroy property, injure cops and to cause mayhem.”
