New Law Makes Weed Legal in New York

Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law Wednesday making weed legal for New Yorkers over 21—and expunging scores of convictions for people prosecuted under old marijuana laws.

The new law decriminalizes possession of small amounts of weed —up to three ounces—and legally permits adults to grow as many as six marijuana plants per person, per household. Under the new law, half of those household plants must remain immature.

Stores selling legal weed are expected to be up and running in about a year.
