NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea – the leader of America’s largest police force – has tested positive for COVID-19, the agency announced Friday.

“He’s doing well,” the NYPD said on its Twitter account. “He’s in touch with his executive staff on a regular basis. He’s staying home and he is running the Police Department remotely.”

It was not immediately clear how Shea became infected.

The commissioner oversees a department in which coronavirus masks are mandated for officers in public. But many on the force are routinely seen without COVID masks in the Bronx, jeopardizing both their own health and that of at-risk residents.
